I think they cut and pasted the same picture on the jester as the knight - look close, same head!Īs for the VistaVision/Technicolor - I can’t say I hate them.

I believe you when you say its good but I looked his career over when I watched White Christmas over the holidays and remember letting out a groan when I saw the poster. Can you imagine this film being made in ‘65 or ‘75. Kind of makes you think on the seismic shifts of progress. In White Christmas he ponders why dancing turned into choreography.

Old Hollywood had died out, it was difficult to get people to the theater as TV was finally off the ground - these dudes had ruled entertainment and everything shifted. I’m not a big fan of frenetic physical comedy but I can see the fustration in a lot of this eras stars. This was Danny Kaye’s next picture after White Christmas (1954) in which he sings of his frustration of changes in the entertainment business for laughs but I think he might have been feeling his career in fade - he peaked in the years following WW2 and the last “Danny Kaye” billed pucture is not long after this. Apparently Paramount went to great lengths to restore the video and audio here, so credit where it’s due, but I really hope they address the lack of attention to the art and special features in future releases. Truly a fun film and one that desperately needs a real company putting out their cover art. Finally, the actual plot unfolds in a fun and clever way with everyone’s competing schemes overlapping in funny ways. There are very elaborate dance sequences that actually seem like they would be very expensive to shoot and require flawless choreography. What transpires is surprisingly witty and sharp dialog delivered at a quick pace. Enter the Black Fox and Maiden Jean, two leaders of a revolutionary force that are dead set on getting the royal baby back and removing the false king from his throne. He’s concerned when he hears that a single male heir baby escaped, but there is no hard evidence that the baby made it so he continues with his rule. It’s about a King that assumes the throne when he thinks he slaughters the incumbent royal family. It was great! By far my favorite from Paramount Presents and a comedy I would be excited to show people that I know can stand musicals. Then Angela Lansbury’s character was funny, Cecil Parker’s horny King was funny, and before I knew it this damn film won me over. The song ends and the actual Black Fox comes back to their forest hideout, takes a look at the imposter that we thought was the real bandit and says “I told you not to wear my clothes!” It was a well-written surprise and kind of funny.

Then we got to a scene where a Robin Hood type character - the Black Fox - introduces himself and his crew that all dresses like him to evade capture.

Anyways, the rich deep colors combined with the soft focus on every scene make me immediately struggle to stay focused.īut then the movie started and the dialog was kind of funny. I should come clean here and say I have a natural bias against Technicolor, or in this case maybe VistaVision. Then when I did put it on and saw it was in Technicolor I was equally not thrilled. When Paramount Presents released this one I was admittedly not excited to see it because the cover art is so awful. This is a sneaky good film that in the right circumstances might even be considered a very good comedy musical.
